The Last Days of Ellis Island by Gaëlle Josse won the EU prize for literature and is published in Natasha Lehrer’s English translation next month.

It’s set in Ellis Island – the immigration inspection centre in New York harbor, the gateway to America for millions of immigrants during the first half of the twentieth century. The narrator is an officer in the Bureau of Immigration, and the last resident of the island.  He held a position of immense power over people’s lives – a power that could be abused…
