Jaap Robben, one of the most talked-about contemporary Dutch writers will visit Sheffield in October 2021 to present his latest novels at the Off the Shelf Literature festival in two unique events.
Biography of a Fly (October 2021) is the beautifully-illustrated life story of a fly from his first waking moments until his deathbed, making friends and living life with gusto no matter how short it is. Biography of A Fly will have a special launch in Sheffield as the story is told across 17 poster sites throughout the city. The sites can be reached by bicycle or by using a self-guided walking tour. You can download an interactive map here and follow the trail.
Sara Unwin, Off the Shelf Festival Manager, University of Sheffield, says ‘We are really thrilled to be working with New Dutch Writing to unveil Jaap’s epic tale across the streets of central Sheffield in October, split over 30 posters.
A QR code on every poster will help people to navigate their way through each chapter and we hope people will head off on a self led walk – or cycle – to enjoy it.
It will be wonderful to welcome Jaap to Sheffield to see his work writ large, such a treat for our 30th edition. Paul Faassen’s illustrations work beautifully in their new format and we are very much looking forward to seeing selfies from our readers coming in via #otsbuzzz’
Jaap Robben says ‘The idea of Fly flying through Sheffield and through the UK as a book, gives me a buzzing feeling that makes me smile these days. I feel really honoured that Off the Shelf and World Editions are both so engaged with my work to make this possible and accessible in English! Can’t wait to walk through Sheffield.’
Biography of a Fly poster campaign is produced in partnership with Off the Shelf Festival of Words Sheffield, New Dutch Writing, the Dutch Foundation for Literature, JackArts and World Editions.
